Lebanon Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Earns National Recognition

Gannett Fleming of Camp Hill, Cumberland County, has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 49th annual Engineering Excellence Awards for the City of Lebanon Authority’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A four-pronged approach upgraded a half-century old treatment plant to meet projected long-term growth while also meeting environmental standards.
The project team incorporated equipment that increases the plant’s rated hydraulic capacity to 30 million gallons per day, yet fits within the facility’s existing footprint.  This strategy sustains the environment, and saves money.
The application of several emerging technologies helped transform the plant into a facility that exceeds Chesapeake Bay nutrient discharge limits, and meets the community’s wastewater treatment needs through 2035.
Completed on time and under budget, the project adds value to the wastewater industry by providing a model of optimization for both new and retrofitted plants.
ACEC recognized 151 projects throughout the nation and the world as preeminent engineering achievements, and all were eligible for top national honors. Judging for this year’s awards—known industry-wide as the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry”– took place in February, conducted by a panel of more than 30 engineers, architects, government officials, media members, and academia.
Award criteria included uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, complexity, and success in achieving goals.
Winners of the top national awards—including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards and the prestigious “Grand Conceptor Award” for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement—will be revealed at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards Dinner and Gala, a black-tie event to be held April 19 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.
