Keep PA Beautiful Recognizes Outstanding 2017 Volunteers & Program Achievements

Each year, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides an opportunity to recognize the outstanding efforts of their volunteers and affiliates for their dedication, commitment and exceptional contributions to keeping Pennsylvania beautiful.
Gold Shovel Award - McKean County
The Gold Shovel Awards are designed to acknowledge Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Affiliates and or partners for outstanding program achievement.
This year’s recipient is PA CleanWays of McKean County, an affiliate since 2000, for their annual tire collection. PA CleanWays of McKean County has offered an annual tire event since 2012.
“This event helps McKean County residents dispose of tires in an affordable and convenient way. The event greatly helps reduce the number of tires found at illegal dumpsites,” said Justin Lund, Coordinator of PA CleanWays of McKean County. This year alone, close to 2,000 tires were surrendered by nearly 300 residents.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful affiliates nominated their own Volunteers of the Year - they include:
-- George Conrad first volunteered with Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful in 2006 when they tackled the Alexandria Pike dumpsites cleanup, helping to remove over 16 tons of trash from the roadway.
Since then, George, a runner, has kept his eyes open for active dumpsites and cleanup opportunities. He has also participated in all 5 years of the Juniata River Cleanup, hosted by Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful, where volunteers remove trash by kayak and canoe from the county’s largest river each August.
“George is a very active community member, and his leadership, good nature, friendliness, and effort are all assets to our organization. We are pleased to nominate him for our Volunteer of the Year Award,” stated Stacia-Fe Gillen, Coordinator of Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful.
-- Brandon Yourth is named volunteer of the year by Keep Perry County Beautiful. Brandon attends Carson Long Military Academy in New Bloomfield, PA. He has been an active member of Keep Perry County Beautiful since spring 2016, participating in cleanups, tire collections and recycling events.
“He is kind and polite to everyone he meets and is always willing to jump in and help someone when they need it; whether it’s unloading a resident’s vehicle during a collection event or climbing on to a truck bed and slinging tires. Brandon is a hard worker and doesn’t give up until the job is done,” said Kristie Smith, Coordinator of Keep Perry County Beautiful.
“Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is indebted to our local affiliates and volunteers across the state. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our Gold Shovel Awardee and volunteers of the year and thank them for keeping our communities clean, beautiful and more vibrant,” stated Shannon Reiter, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful President.
