Lacawac Sanctuary and Field Station in Wayne County Monday announced the Robert Estabrook Moeller Memorial Awards were awarded to Dr. Elise Heiss, King’s College in Wilkes-Barre and Rachel Pilla, Miami University of Ohio.
Dr. Heiss, a chemistry professor at King’s College, has been awarded a $2,000 grant for her research on Nitrogen Cycling in Lake Lacawac: Investigating Environmental Controls on Water Column Nitrification.
Ms. Pilla, a PhD student at Miami has also been awarded a $2,000 grant for her research entitled: Mapping the Metabolic Landscape for Threatened Zooplankton Taxa in Lakes.
Dr. Robert E. Moeller, a long-time friend and supporter of Lacawac Sanctuary, passed away in 2011. Robert was a limnologist (lake scientist) who spent many years at Lacawac conducting research on Lake Lacawac and other nearby Pocono lakes.
Robert’s interests in limnology were broad and encompassed diverse topics including paleolimnology, aquatic botany, and the ecology of ultraviolet radiation.
Throughout his career, Robert was generous in giving his time to help students and colleagues with their research. Robert’s generosity extended to his establishment of an endowed fund which supports promising students and faculty in limnology.
To contribute to the fund, please send checks to Lacawac Sanctuary, 94 Sanctuary Rd., Lake Ariel, PA 18436 and make payable to Lacawac Sanctuary – Moeller Fund.
